«I really appreciated cooperating with the Adnovum team. They worked independently with the input from our designers and made great decisions on their own. On the other hand, they proactively came up with ideas and asked good questions.»

The starting point

The existing electricity grid is increasingly reaching its limits. Over the past 120 years, it has been built according to the principle that large central power plants based on hydroelectric and nuclear power generate electricity and deliver it to urban centers, villages, and houses.

But this setup is currently undergoing a fundamental shift. More and more private households with solar modules are contributing to electricity production, and consumer behavior is changing. In 2023 alone, 3624 photovoltaic systems, 1375 EV charging stations, and 2282 heat pumps were added to the BKW distribution grid. As a result, power generation is becoming more decentralized and more volatile due to its dependence on the weather. At the same time, electricity consumption is rising sharply and threatens to overload the grid with unprecedented power peaks.

So there is an urgent need to reshape the power system, and BKW Power Grid decided to use an application, the BKW ProgRés Explorer, to illustrate the necessity of expanding and remodeling the electricity grid and to explain imminent challenges. For this purpose, the Technology and Innovation Team at BKW Power Grid developed complex algorithms that can simulate a wide range of detailed market development scenarios. The solution, however, lacked an efficient and intuitive frontend that could make the findings of these calculations comprehensible to non-specialist stakeholders and decision-makers. This is where Adnovum entered the picture.

Features that give real added value

Transparency: The ProgRés Explorer helps promote dialog with municipalities, authorities, representatives of energy policy, stakeholders, and decision-makers. The tool illustrates in an accessible way the potential developments of the entire network and how future-ready individual sections are, creating a better understanding among all involved.

Planning with foresight: The app provides a solid basis for discussing and planning appropriate legal measures.

Interactivity: By means of numerous variables, e.g., distribution variants, consumption and production profiles, and network infrastructures, the network status for selected scenarios and simulations is displayed in real time.

How we got there

One major factor in the project's success was the close and professional cooperation. The backend developers of BKW Power Grid and our frontend experts worked as a team, were both involved in the planning and implementation of agile sprints, and communicated on a daily basis. And as always, Adnovum's technological skills and expertise in software development came into play here as well: BKW Power Grid's request for a technology stack with Angular was met with ease. In addition, the composition of our team with Swiss project managers and nearshore employees not only ensured ideal communication and fast action, but also a good cost-benefit ratio for BKW Power Grid.

«With a challenging project, you have to set a clear focus and move forward. And with a partner like Adnovum, you can do that.»

This is our client

As the operator of Switzerland’s largest distribution system, BKW Power Grid ensures that electricity flows reliably from production facilities to their customers. They plan and build network infrastructure and make the most of the opportunities that digitalization has to offer to create sustainable living spaces. They distribute electricity to one million people in their supply area via 22,000 km of lines and 185,000 grid connections. Power Grid is a business unit of BKW Energie AG with around 900 employees.
