Like a fireman, Marcos is the doer-type, who can be counted on to tackle his client’s urgent challenges and save their day. «Once our client called me in panic because their database had broken down, which was a huge disaster for their business worldwide. A few of us worked through the night and luckily found a solution by the next morning. It is exciting to be confronted with these complex technical challenges and look for a way out with your team.»
Never underestimate baby steps and a solid network
Over the years, Marcos has gained a lot of experience: «I learn something every day, even if it is something small. Many small steps build experience.» And he also built many trusted relationships. «Once a client who had moved to Japan sent me a bottle of saké as a thank you for our collaboration», he says with a grateful smile. Today he has a wide network of experienced clients, partners and colleagues to draw from.

On paper Marcos’ career seems to follow a traditional linear path: studies in systems engineering, working for various Spanish companies as a software engineer to digitize learning, then joined Adnovum Zurich in 2011 as a Professional Engineer, later becoming Senior and now Principal. Specialized in Identity & Access Management, Marcos acts as an advisor, architect and implementer to clients. «When the client is happy, I am happy» is his motto that clearly comes from the heart.
In reality, Marcos has held a wider array of roles ranging from unit architect and project lead to trainer. «I am grateful for these opportunities. I tried Project Manager but realized there are others who are better and I wanted to focus on training. Training people was a spontaneous decision that satisfied my curiosity and love of learning and sharing what I know with others.»
Have a break, have a laugh
Yet, standing in front of a class requires a different set of skills he had to develop. «It is challenging to adapt to different types of learners. What I found to be really important for all is creating a positive environment where people feel at ease, can concentrate and also have a laugh», something his Latin enthusiasm certainly masters to do.
And what next, Marcos? «I now look forward to becoming a Career Coach and developing my leadership skills. Getting a better understanding of who I am as a leader and sharpen my soft skills will help me in all my roles. Because no matter the technical challenges, in the end it is about the person.»
